Having trouble hacking through Enter The Matrix? If you're like us, the last thing you want to do after kicking, punching and shooting your way through the game is try to figure out the game's cryptic hacking system. Have no fear! We've been there and done that, and we're revealing all the answers right here, so jack in!

(Warning! There are lots of spoilers ahead, so if you haven't finished the game yet and want to keep some of the surprises ... turn away now!)

Hacking 101

The hacking system in Enter The Matrix is in some ways similar to an old MS-DOS interface, with basic commands like DIR, etc. Once you've fully "hacked" the system, you can view movies, look at artwork from the game, get messages from some of the key characters from The Matrix, "drop" weapons for Ghost and Niobe to use in certain locations in the game, and even unlock a few new modes, including multiplayer fighting and mini-games.

To begin, select the Hacking option from the main menu, select a savegame to associate your progress with, and the interface will come up. After a brief "virus scan," the lower portion of the screen will show a command list and keyboard layout. If you're playing on a console, you'll be able to highlight many of the commands and execute them; if you're on a PC, it's a little easier to do the typing, but you can also quick-execute commands using the CTRL key (NOT Enter). Since the hacking "campaign" is fairly linear, we'll run through it drive-by-drive.

The A:\ Drive

When you start, you only have two commands available: HELP and EXIT. You don't want to do the latter, so type HELP. The system will give you an example of HELP DIR, so do just that:

HELP DIR

You'll see the following message:

DIR: Displays list of files and folders at destination.
Usage: DIR [folder] or [drive name]
Example: DIR A: or DIR A: TOOLS

Type in DIR A: and you'll see the following:

Directory of A:
\SYSTEM
\TOOLS
\TEXT

Start by checking the SYSTEM directory. (DIR A:\SYSTEM) You'll find a bunch of .EXE files: READ.EXE, ECHO.EXE, REBOOT.EXE, etc. The important command right now is READ.EXE, which allows you to read the contents of a text file, which is exactly what you'll find in the \TEXT folder.

Do a DIR command on the \TEXT folder, and you'll see four .TXT files. If you load up the READ command, all four files will be queued up in the parameters window. Read each one -- most are fluff, but one has some important information.

NOTEZ.TXT

In the NOTEZ.TXT file, you'll notice that there's a B: drive in addition to the A: drive you're currently on.

- In that same file, you'll also see a note explaining that the VIRTUAL drive password has been changed to FROZENFISH. Remember this.

- MANUAL1.TXT, MANUAL2.TXT and PASSWORD.TXT don't have much info you need right now. You can check them out if you want, but it's not necessary.

Before moving on, do a DIR on the A:\TOOLS directory. There are three commands in there: VIBRATION.EXE, BEEP.EXE, and CHEAT.EXE. VIBRATION lets you make your controller shake (or rumble, on the GameCube), and BEEP lets you play back a series of simple tones. CHEAT is the most important of these commands, as it will let you enter cheat codes (we'll cover that later).

Type in LOGIN at the prompt. When asked, type in GUEST. You'll be given access to the B:\ drive, which holds a lot of local media.

The B:\ Drive

To see what's on the B:\ drive, type

The directory of the B:\ drive.

DIR B:

You'll get a listing of six directories:

ID (characters in the game)
GUNS (weapons)
FMV (movie clips)
MAPS (levels)
CARS (well, duh)
TOOLS (more commands)

Depending on how far into the game you are, performing a DIR on any of the asset directories (/ID, /GUNS, /FMV, etc) will produce a partial list of things you have access to; the rest will appear as *LOCKED. (All items are locked until you encounter them in the regular game.)

To get permission to play with these assets, you need to unlock the special tools in the B:\TOOLS folder. To start, type in DIR B:\TOOLS. You'll get a message that says the directory is "binary encrypted", and requires a 5-digit access code.

Cracking the binary code.

While this code is generated randomly each time you log on, hacking the code is pretty easy. Basically, the fact that the code is binary means it only consists of 0's and 1's, and if you type in any 5 digits, the computer will tell you how many digits you have right, and how many are in the correct place.

From here, determining the code is a simple matter of trial and error. For instance, if you started by typing in 00000, you might get a response that you have 1 digit correct. From that, you know that the code has four 1's and one 0, so keep trying different combinations until you find the right one. There are only 32 possible combinations, so figuring out the right one shouldn't take long.

Once you've gained access to the B:\ Drive, you'll see a list of six commands:

The VIEW command lets you see detailed weapon info.

VIEW.EXE
VIRTUAL.EXE
TRACEKILL.EXE
DROP.EXE
PLAY.EXE
DECODE.EXE

VIEW - allows you to view pictures and info on characters, guns and weapons unlocked in the game.

PLAY - allows you to play full-motion video movies you've already unlocked. Once you've browsed the FMV directory, any movies you've unlocked will automatically appear in the Parameters window after you've entered the PLAY command.

(For reasons that aren't entirely clear, the PC version requires using the CTRL key to execute the VIEW and PLAY commands; typing the commands in manually and pressing Enter will not work.)

DROP - allows you to "hack" the Matrix and "drop" extra weapons into certain locations. To execute a drop:

1) First view any levels available in the MAPS directory. If you're early on in the game, many will appear as *LOCKED.IMG.
2) Type in the VIEW command, and view any maps you can. In the lower right-hand corner of each map, you'll see a code.
3) Type DROP [code]. This will drop a special cache of weapons at the location indicated on the map you viewed. Of course, you could just use the following codes:

You can find codes for each map in the lower right.

B1AXXF2 - 2nd Floor Post Office
RKHMS10 - Airport Tunnels
ZKHBD10 - Courtyard
JXTRR10 - Drainage Canal
PNSRZ10 - North Concourse
RHFTQ10 - Skyscraper
ZSZQH10 - Warehouse
JDHQL10 - Transformer Field

DECODE - As far as we can tell, this command is to be used in conjunction with BradyGames' official Enter the Matrix strategy guide. Towards the rear of that book is a section called "Glitches in the Matrix," which is meant to be an advanced section on hacking. The problem: many of the key words are written in code, so it's not entirely clear how to use the guide.

In theory, you can use the DECODE command to decipher words from the strategy guide ... except it only seems to work 100% with the PS2 version. If you try to decode these words on the other platforms, it works with far less success (we've had 0% success with the PC version). As best as we can verify with Shiny, this truly is "a glitch in the Matrix," but the good news is that it doesn't affect anything outside reading the strategy guide -- you won't miss out on any features in the game ... as long as you read the rest of this guide, of course.
The V:\ Drive

You're almost done with the B:\ drive, so it's time to move on:

VIRTUAL.EXE -- This command is the most important command to moving forward through the hacking narrative, as it opens up access to another drive. You'll have to jump through a few hoops to get there, however. (IMPORTANT! You should exit and save your progress before continuing here.)

The symbol for the "red" solution.

1) At the prompt, type in VIRTUAL.EXE

2) When asked, type in the password you found earlier in the NOTEZ.TXT: FROZENFISH

3) After connecting, you'll be presented with a puzzle: to create a complete Chinese symbol before time runs out. There are three possible pieces for each of the nine slots, leading to two possible solutions (red and blue). Start with the center piece, continue with the center column, and then toggle the surrounding pieces until you have a finished picture.

4) IMPORTANT: If you wind up with the blue solution, you'll get an audio message from Neo that you're being traced. Immediately use the TRACEKILL.EXE command or you'll experience a system failure, and all the access you've acquired so far will be GONE. Yes, that means you'll have to start hacking entirely from scratch. Don't let this happen!

5) Keep trying until you get the red solution. You'll get a new message from Neo, and access to the VIRTUAL drive.

Do a DIR on the VIRTUAL drive. You'll see two directories: TOOLS and ROOT. You can't do a DIR on the ROOT directory yet (you need an admin password), but you can search the VIRTUAL/TOOLS directory. Inside, you'll find the following:

Gaining access to the ROOT directory.

ROOTSEARCH.EXE
DIAL.EXE

- Use the ROOTSEARCH command to get the admin password to the ROOT directory. It's THISISNOTREAL.

- Do a DIR on the ROOT directory, and enter the password. Inside are two commands: MAIL.EXE and PORTKEY.EXE. You need a special code to use the PORTKEY command, so type MAIL.

- You'll be prompted for the ROOTADMIN password, and then you'll see you have 1 email. Type Y to view the mail. It says:

DIAL
001-949-555-0112
001-714-555-0187
001-213-555-0142
001-310-555-0111

You can use DIAL.EXE to call all four numbers, but only the last two hold anything of interest. The 213 number is a message from Morpheus, saying that you've raised a red flag in the system. The 310 number contains a message from Trinity, who gives you a code: 942.

Enter PORTKEY 942 at the next prompt, and the screen will go crazy. You're about to hook up with Trinity.

"Chatting" with Trinity

I'm chatting with Trinity! w000!

After a few seconds, you'll see:

Knock. Knock.
Hi, it's me, Trinity.

At this point, you'll enter into a simulated "conversation" with Trinity, although you only get to say two sentences to her, and she ignores just about everything you say. (At the first prompt, she'll usually respond with "good, the connection's working," although "No" "Yes" and "I Love You" prompt different answers.)

You can say pretty much anything you want here; Trinity will eventually upload a CRACK.EXE to your ROOT directory, and give you a code of 8RAM. When you get back to the prompt, type CRACK 8RAM and you'll get access to the RAM drive.
The RAM:\ Drive

Do a DIR on the \RAM drive. There are three directories:

The directory of the \RAM drive.

\TRINITY
\PROG
\BIO

Start by searching the \RAM\TRINITY drive. Inside are three programs: TRAINING.EXE, HANDSHAKE.EXE, and READBIO.EXE.

READBIO.EXE - in the BIO directory is a file called either GHOSTBIO or NIOBEBIO, depending on which character your save file is associated with. You can use the READBIO command to read these files, which contain stats on your game to date.

TRAINING.EXE - there's a SWORD program you can find in the PROG directory (but only after completing the game). If you run TRAINING SWORD, Niobe will gain access to a sword that she can use at any time by executing kick+punch.

HANDSHAKE.EXE - this where the fun starts. Type in HANDSHAKE, and your computer will try to connect with the Zion fleet. The first two ships are out of range, but you'll connect to …

Sparks and the Logos

Talking to Sparks.

Aboard the Logos, Sparks picks up your signal. He'll type in a short message, and like the exchange with Trinity, you can answer him back a few times, although he'll ignore most everything you say and continue with his regularly scripted message.

Eventually, Sparks will say something about a virus, and asks that you run EMP.EXE. After you do, he says he was only joking, and unlocks a "present" for you, which you can find at the Load screen.

After a short message from Neo, Sparks closes the connection and kicks you out of the terminal. Congrats! You've beaten the majority of the hacking section, so save your game, plug in a second controller, and go to the Load menu to examine your prize.

Multiplayer

Pull up the Load menu and scroll all the way to the left. If you have a second controller plugged in, you'll find a new "Multiplayer" option, where you and a buddy can fight head-to-head. (Note: We haven't been able to get this working on the PC yet.)

Each of the seven arenas has its own pair of fixed fighters, such as Niobe vs. Ghost, Morpheus vs. Agent Smith, etc. You can't use Focus in any of the fights, and it's limited as fighting games go, but it's still fun for a brief bit, especially if you check out the bizarre match-up in the seventh arena.

Calling Persephone

There's still stuff to unlock in the hacking mode, so load your save game back up. There's a phone number on the wall in the Chateau - 0019495550101 - so use the DIAL program to check it out. It's a message from Persephone … and she could really use some close attention.

Cheat Codes

There are a number of cheat codes available for Enter The Matrix -- these are just a few. To enter a code, type in CHEAT and then any of the codes below.

69E5D9E4 - Unlimited Focus
1DDF2556 - Unlimited Ammo
FFFFFFF1 - Invisibility Cheat -- enemies can't see you and don't shoot at you.
13D2C77F - Unlocks Sparks' Secret Training Construct

Sparks' Training Construct

Niobe fights SWAT officers in the training area.

The last goodie we'll cover in this guide is Sparks' training construct, which resembles the Industrial Hallway from Reloaded. There are two red doors here, but only one is unlocked at first. Inside, you'll find two mini-games that revolve around shooting, and when those are completed successfully, the other door will unlock, revealing two more mini-games focused on fighting.

That's it! You're now an expert at hacking the Matrix … just stay off my drive, and whatever you do, don't run EMP.EXE.
